Week 1

Week 2

Discussion 1: “Stakeholders and Corporate Governance.” Students will respond to the following:
Select an organization of your choice and identify both primary and secondary stakeholders and their most likely issue(s) with the organization
o Discuss how the organization’s corporate governance could promote responsibility to the stakeholders you identified (include the model of corporate governance and the role of the board of directors in your response).

Discussion 2: “Implementing a Stakeholder Perspective.” Students will respond to the
following:
Analyze the steps for implementing a stakeholder perspective and determine which step is the most essential to get right. Explain your reasoning.
Improve the process of implementing a stakeholder perspective by replacing one
(1) of the steps or adding an additional step. Explain how your changes would make the overall process better.


Week 3

Discussion 1: “Aspects of Ethical Issues.” Students will respond to the following:
Analyze the three (3) aspects of ethical issues (honesty, fairness, and integrity).
Discuss which of the three (3) is the most important from a business ethics perspective and why.
Determine if any other aspects should be included (perhaps a fourth or fifth?), or if these three (3) are all encompassing. Explain your rationale.

Discussion 2: “Ethical Issues and Dilemmas.” Students will respond to the following:
Analyze the ethical issues and dilemmas discussed in this chapter. Rank-order the issues in terms of their negative impact on both business and the public at large.
Explain your rationale.
Determine which ethical issue is the most difficult to address. Give specific examples to support your response



Week 4

· Discussion 1: “Compliance and Gatekeepers.” Students will respond to the following:
Analyze the requirements for legal compliance and determine which category of laws (regulating competition, protecting consumers, etc.) has had the largest overall impact on the greatest number of businesses. Explain your rationale.
Analyze the role of gatekeepers and determine who else should play a gate keeping role in the business world. Defend your response with specific examples.

· Discussion 2: “Sarbanes-Oxley and Beyond.” Students will respond to the following:
Analyze the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and make at least one (1) recommendation for how the act can be improved. Be sure to explain why your recommendation addresses something that was overlooked in the original act or addresses a new concern that has arisen since the act when into law.
Create a way for a business or corporation to combine the federal sentencing guidelines for organizations and “highly appropriate core practices” into a single company policy. Now that you have done this, determine if it is a good idea to combine the two (2) or not. Explain your rationale.


Week 5

Discussion 1: “A Framework for Ethical Decisions.” Students will respond to the following:
Analyze the framework for ethical decision making in business and make at least one (1) recommendation for improvement.
The authors state that their framework for ethical decision making in business does not describe how to make ethical decisions, but rather helps one understand the factors and processes related to ethical decision making. Analyze the framework and make recommendations for how it could be used to make ethical decisions.

· Discussion 2: “Ethical Leadership.” Students will respond to the following:
Analyze the leadership styles discussed in Chapter 5 and determine which leadership style would have the most positive effect on ethical decisions. Explain your rationale.
Analyze the habits of strong ethical leaders and create a list of characteristics for a “perfect” CEO in an industry of your choice. Explain your reasons for the list.


Week 6

Discussion 1: “Perspectives of Moral Philosophy.” Students will respond to the following:
Compare and contrast the teleological, deontological, virtue, and justice perspectives of moral philosophy.
Determine if the relativist perspective should be clumped together with the four (4) perspectives listed above, or if there is something qualitatively different about this perspective of moral philosophy. Explain your rationale.

· Discussion 2: “Moral Development.” Students will respond to the following:
Analyze Kohlberg’s stages of moral development and determine which stage best describes the majority of your coworkers (or classmates). Please give specific examples.
Speculate on the roles that perspectives of moral philosophy and stages of moral development play in the committing of white collar crimes. With these roles in mind, discuss how white collar crime may differ from other types of crime like burglary or assault.

· Discussion 1: “Corporate Culture and Motivating Ethical Behavior.” Students will respond to the following:
Analyze the role of corporate culture in ethical decision making and create a fictional “best case” and “worst case” scenario for promoting ethical behavior.
Determine and discuss how leaders of a corporation can use power, in each of the five (5) forms discussed, to motivate ethical behavior in their employees.

· Discussion 2: “Organizational Structure and Groups.” Students will respond to thefollowing:
o Consider the level of ethical behavior at your current employer (or school) and
determine if a centralized or decentralized organizational structure would
encourage more ethical behavior among your peers. Explain your rationale.
o Determine how various types of work groups affect the relationship between
individual and group ethical decision making

Week 8

Discussion 1: “Standards and Codes.” Students will respond to the following:
Create a list of universal standards that can be applied to organizational ethics
programs (even though the text says it has never been done).
o Determine and discuss how the standards you just created would help you develop
an effective ethics program and code or conduct. Please give specific examples.

· Discussion 2: “Training and Monitoring.” Students will respond to the following:
o Discuss the steps you would take to develop ethics training and communication at
your current place of work (or school).
o Analyze your current work (or school) environment and determine how best to
monitor and enforce ethical standards.


Week 9
Discussion 1: “Ethics Audit Benefits.” Students will respond to the following:
o Compare (1) the benefits associated with conducting an ethics audit against (2)
the challenges of measuring nonfinancial performance and the risks inherent in
ethics auditing.
Determine if it would ever be better not to conduct an ethics audit. Explain your rationale.

· Discussion 2: “Ethics Audit Process.” Students will respond to the following:
o Analyze the process of conducting an ethics audit and determine which step
would be the most difficult to execute correctly. Make at least one (1)
recommendation for ensuring the step you identified is successfully completed.
o Carefully consider each step in the ethics audit process and build upon the process
as a whole by adding one (1) additional step (the additional step can be added
anywhere in the process). Explain how your revised process will produce better
results than the original.

Week 10
Discussion 1: “Global Management Ethics.” Students will respond to the following:
o Analyze the key terms of “capitalism, economics, and business ethics” with a
focus on how the countries discussed have changed over the last 70 years.
Anticipate the direction these countries will take over the next 30 years.
Review the different global management ethics lists found in Table 10-1 and
then create one (a better one) of your own. Explain why your list is better than
those depicted.

· Discussion 2: “Global Business Practices and Large Multinationals.” Students will
respond to the following:
o Analyze the ethical issues found under “global business practices”
(consumerism, human rights, health care, and labor), and determine which set of
issues presents the most significant ethical challenges today. Determine which
will be the most significant 20 years from now. Explain your rationale.
o Assess the impact the IMF and the WTO have on large multinational
corporations like Wal-Mart or Exxon Mobil. Give specific examples to support
your argument.

Discussion 1: “Looking Back.” Students will respond to the following:
o Determine the single most important thing you learned in this course and explain
why it is more significant than everything else.
o For the first nine (9) course outcomes for this course (see page two), create a one sentence
best practice statement; one (1) sentence for each course outcome.
