BSHS 442 WEEK 4 INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT CONCEPTS AND TERMS QUIZ

Prepare to take a quiz on concepts and terms.

Questions
1.       CONTRACTING: You are working with a psychiatric patient, Pat, who is at risk of committing suicide. Your suicide prevention model suggests that you negotiate a “safety plan” with the client (e.g., Pat will stay with a friend overnight; you will contact the friend by phone to provide the friend with instruction about what to do in case of emergency, Pat will call the 24-hour crisis line if Pat starts to think about committing suicide; Pat will meet with you tomorrow to make further plans). Should this agreement be implicit, explicit and oral, or written? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of agreement? Do you or Pat require legal advice before finalizing this agreement? Why or why not? Is this agreement a legally binding agreement? What are the consequences if either one of you breaks the agreement? (3)
2.       IMPARTIALITY DILEMMA: You are facilitating a play therapy group for 6-year-olds who have experienced physical abuse from their parents. During the third session, two children start to fight over one of the puppets. You decide to use your meditative skills to help them resolve this conflict. You encourage them to come up with their own decision rather than impose one on them. You are able to help them work toward a mutually agreeable solution: rip the puppet into small pieces so neither of them can fight over it anymore. You personally find this solution troubling because it is violent and destructive. Still, you have encouraged the children to develop their own solution. Do you support their decision or direct them to a different type of solution? What factors do you consider in making your decision? (3)
3.     LOBBY GROUP CONFLICT: A group of mental health counselors is lobbying Conflictia’s government for more funding for mental health services. A group of probation officers is asking the same government to invest more money in the criminal justice system. Each group believes that more money to one cause means less money for the other cause. What is the nature of the conflict between the groups? Which approach to group facilitation would be most appropriate for dealing with this conflict? Why? (2)
4.       ETHICAL ISSUES: Select one of the following situations. Analyze the ethical issues and suggest how you might try to resolve them. How would your approach differ if you adopted a conflict resolution approach versus a framework for ethical decision making from the literature (e.g., Corey et al., 2007; Dolgoff et al., 2005; Menkel-Meadow & Wheeler, 2004)? (3)
a.       One of your clients self-identifies as a neo-Nazi. She wants you to help her get into a social work program at a local college. Personally, you do not believe she is an appropriate candidate. Your job, however, is to help clients apply to school programs.
b.      A group of elderly clients asks you to help them advocate for a new recreation center for seniors. You do not believe that this center has much of a chance of succeeding. You would prefer to focus on more feasible advocacy projects.
c.       A young man suffering from cancer has been denied social assistance because he has parents who are able to support him. The man does not have a good relationship with his parents and does not want to receive their support. There is an internal appeals procedure for social assistance; however, you would have to establish a new precedent. The stress of going through with the appeals procedures might take its toll on this client, already quite ill from cancer. He is unsure about how to proceed and seeks your advice as an advocate. You think it would make a great test case, but the likelihood of success is relatively low.

5.       APOLOGY DILEMMA: Assume you are working with Allie, a woman in recovery from alcoholism. Allie attends AA and is using its 12-step approach to recovery. Allie tells you in confidence that she stole $20,000 from her employer, who never discovered who stole it. Allie wants to apolog
